Year 5 had a really enjoyable day on Tuesday 30th January, when we all came to school dressed as Ancient Greeks. Many of the costumes looked amazing! All the children threw themselves into the different activities which included drama and Greek dancing, as well as learning to write our names in Greek and making a Greek pot and a collage of a Greek building. At the end of the day we all enjoyed some Greek food, including olives, humous, taramasalata, feta and haloumi cheese. However, the Greek yogurt and honey was probably the most popular option! We will be continuing our Ancient Greek topic for a couple of weeks after half term, before moving onto our new history topic – The role of Baghdad in the Early Islamic Civilisation.
During the second half of the Spring term we will be focusing on Fractions in maths lessons. In Literacy, we will be looking at biographies, whilst continuing with our spelling, grammar and punctuation work. Our new class novel will be: The Kites are Flying by Michael Morpurgo. Science lessons will focus on Forces this half term.
PE days for 5H have changed to Monday and Tuesday until Easter.
Reminder: It’s World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. We are looking forward to seeing the children dressed as characters from books!
Welcome back to a new term.
This half-term out topic is about the Ancient Greeks. We will be learning about democracy, the Olympics, Gods and Goddesses and the Trojan War.
In science, we will be continuing our learning about materials and their properties. In maths, we will be focusing on multiplication, division and fractions. This is a number-intensive term and it is vital that the children know their multiplication tables and division facts. Keep practising regularly!
Our work in English will be linked to our Ancient Greek topic and we will be having a go at writing our own myths. Spelling, grammar and punctuation will also remain a focus to help improve our writing. Our class novel this half term is: Who let the Gods out? by Maz Evans.
During Design Technology lessons we will be making and evaluating bread. PE lessons this half term will be on Tuesday and Wednesday for 5H. Please make sure you bring the correct kit and footwear.
Happy new year to you all!
This term in Year 5, we are learning about living things and their habitats. We have started by looking very closely at plants and finding out about how they reproduce. In maths we will be focusing on shape and measures, whilst still continuing to practise our arithmetic skills.
The children need to ensure they have their trainers in school as we have joined with Year 4 to improve our fitness by doing a mile run (that’s 8 times round the school field!) three times a week. Hopefully over the next few weeks we will all improve our fitness.
Matthew and Charlotte from 5H and Phoebe and Kaden from 5B had some exciting news this week. They won the competition to visit London in July with Mrs Hoyle as part of the British Values curriculum. We are all looking forward to hearing all about the trip and seeing some of the photographs of the different places they visit.
Mrs Handley and Mr Barker
Today we had a water safety assembly. We learnt what to do if we see a human or animal in the water and what we can do to keep ourselves safe around the rivers and canals.
Welcome to Ancient Greece, Gildersome style. On our theme day we acted out a Greek myth, drew picture of mythical creatures, ate traditional Greek food and made laurel garlands.
